Age-Adjusted Hospitalization Rate due to Acute Myocardial Infarction

Select a Zip Code
Measurement Period: 2021-2023
This indicator shows the average annual age-adjusted hospitalization rate due to myocardial infarction per 10,000 population aged 18 years and older. Only cases where the first-listed diagnosis is myocardial infarction are included.

Why is this important?

Heart attack, or myocardial infarction, is a highly prevalent form of cardiovascular disease - with one heart attack occurring about every 40 seconds in the United States. A heart attack occurs when the blood flow to the heart is blocked, the lack of oxygen and nutrients results in heart tissue damage or death. According to the CDC, approximately 720,000 Americans have a heart attack every year. Improving cardiovascular health decreases the likelihood of heart attack. Educating those at risk and improved access to care can help improve outcomes and decrease mortality after a heart attack.
